Four members of the lightly regarded Boston Red Sox starting rotation -- John Wasdin, Tom Gordon, Tim Wakefield and Aaron Sele -- combined to pitch 26 consecutive innings without giving up an earned run. The string ended when Steve Avery gave up a run in the first inning on Wednesday, but he hung on for five innings to get his first AL victory.

The first American League homer for new Cleveland Indians third baseman Matt Williams came in his 53rd at-bat of the season.

Colorado Rockies third baseman Vinny Castilla has 46 home runs since Opening Day of last season, 23 on the first pitch.

When the San Francisco Giants swept through New York and Philadelphia to complete a 5-0 road trip, it was the franchise's first undefeated trip of five games or more since 1951 and the first time the club has started a season 5-0 on the road since 1941.

The Indians had defeated the Red Sox 14 times in 15 meetings (including postseason play) when the Red Sox scored an 11-6 victory on Wednesday night.
