Howard County police arrested a 42-year-old Illinois man on the parking lot of the Trucker's Inn in North Laurel after he allegedly shot at another man after a late-night argument over bright headlights.

Police said Leslie Timothy Melton of Beecher City, Ill., was charged with attempted homicide after the incident Wednesday and was taken to the Howard County Detention Center, where he was being held on $50,000 bail.

According to a police report, David Lavell Chambers, 35, who lives in the first block of Masthead Court in Essex, was driving through the truck stop's parking lot about 10 p.m. when Melton approached him to say that the headlights on Chambers' van were too bright.

After a short argument, police said, Melton allegedly reached for a handgun and Chambers sprayed him with pepper spray.

Melton then allegedly fired two rounds from the handgun at Chambers while he was sitting in his van, police said. Chambers was not injured.
