Ordway out of Derby Smokin Mel doubtful

The Kentucky Derby lost a strong New York candidate yesterday when Ordway, winner of last fall's Champagne Stakes, was declared "two jumps behind" in his preparations and more likely to run in the Preakness on May 17.

Meanwhile, Smokin Mel was pronounced doubtful for the Derby because of a quarter-crack in his left front hoof suffered the day before he finished third in the Wood.
