A Cheever Evening'

As chroniclers of WASP society, A. R. Gurney and the late John Cheever would appear to be soul mates. So it seems fitting that Gurney has written "A Cheever Evening" -- a dramatization of Cheever short stories, which opens tomorrow at Theatre Hopkins.

"In its structure it's very much like Gurney's 'The Dining Room,' which we did in 1983. The actors each play 10 to 12 roles," explains director Suzanne Pratt. "Gurney has organized the material to span the period from the tail end of the post-war decade into the 1960s." The Theatre Hopkins cast includes Tom Blair, M.L. Grout, Michael O'Connell, Rosemary Polen, Robert Walsh and Ruth Lawson Walsh.

Theatre Hopkins performs in the Merrick Barn on the Homewood campus of Johns Hopkins University. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2:15 p.m. Sundays through May 18, and 7:30 p.m. May 11. Tickets are $10 and $12. Call 410-516-7159.
