Hits and misses

April 16, 1997|By Joe Strauss

On the field: The bullpen pitched four perfect innings, three by Arthur Rhodes. It has yielded only two runs since April 7.

In the dugout: Almost provoked into removing starter Scott Kamieniecki after Kamieniecki had walked the bases loaded in zTC the fourth inning, manager Davey Johnson hung on. Kamieniecki survived five innings for his second win since Sept. 30, 1995.

In the clubhouse: "I hadn't pitched in about nine days. My arm was feeling good. I was hitting my spots good. I was strong. I was pitching in and out. Davey's got his A guys and his B guys. We're in B. He's got it set up pretty good." -- Rhodes, on his pivotal performance.
