A 29-year-old Catonsville woman was fatally injured Monday when her car veered off an Ellicott City road and struck a set of utility poles stacked in the grass.

Howard County police said a 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Suzanne Plate of the 600 block of Oak Hill Road, was traveling south on Ellicott Mills Drive near Fells Lane about 6 p.m. when it jumped a curb and ran off the road.

A police report said Plate's car hit a speed limit sign and a light pole before striking the stack of utility poles.

Plate, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Police are investigating the accident.
