Towson State women's lacrosse coach Ashley Duncan knows how close her Tigers are to cracking the national rankings. And though four losses to ranked teams didn't exactly prove that, the Tigers are nonetheless determined to take care of matters at hand -- a strong finish and winning the America East.

The Tigers were successful in their first attempt to do so, starting strong and finishing even stronger in defeating UMBC, 15-6, yesterday at Minnegan Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for yesterday evening, but cold temperatures forced it to be played in the afternoon.

Megan Drake's four goals led the way for Towson State (5-4), and Kathy McCafferty, a transfer from UMBC, had three goals and an assist. Debbie Krastel and Kelly Anderson each had two goals for the Retrievers (3-5).

"As a team, we needed to get back to trusting our offensive motion and we really did a good job of doing that," Duncan said. "We have half the season left and we must be prepared to win the first seed for the conference playoffs.

The victory helped the Tigers recover from a 14-3 loss to No. 15 Georgetown on Monday, and was welcome for other reasons as well. It gave the Tigers just their second win in the past six games and provided an upbeat introduction to a three-game stretch against conference foes New Hampshire, Drexel and Boston University.

The Tigers were much more effective on attack than they were against Georgetown, scoring on four of their first six shots and holding a 29-12 advantage in shots for the game. UMBC, however, trailed only 6-4 at halftime.

"We knew Towson would come out fired up in the second half and we needed to keep the momentum we had at halftime," UMBC coach Monica DiCandilo said.

But the undermanned Retrievers (UMBC carries just 18 players) couldn't match Towson State's depth or transition game in the second half. The Tigers converted three times within a five-minute span early in the second half. McCafferty scored on an uncontested shot and Drake and Liz Wilson followed with quick strikes off the draw to push Towson State's lead to 10-4 at the 19: 44 mark.

In all, eight players scored at least a point for the Tigers.
