Free tax help to be offered at two sites

April 11, 1997|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

With Tuesday's deadline for filing state and federal taxes fast approaching, free tax help will be available for last-minute filers at the Ellicott City branch of the state comptroller's office and Laurel Centre Mall in Laurel.

The Ellicott City branch, in the state multiservice center at 3451 Courthouse Drive, will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow to assist taxpayers with state tax forms. The Internal Revenue Service and state tax officials will hand out tax forms and answer questions at the Laurel Centre, off U.S. 1.

Taxpayers with state tax questions can call any local taxpayer service office, 410-974-3981 in Central Maryland or 1-800-MD-TAXES from elsewhere in Maryland. The best times to call are from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Maryland Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein said more than 1.4 million taxpayers have filed state returns so far, with one out of nine being filed electronically. Goldstein said those who file electronically get the speediest refunds -- within 48 hours, the state has promised, even for returns filed at the last minute.

Tax forms also can be found on the Internet at www.comp.state. md.us. Goldstein said taxpayers who need to file an extension can do so by accessing that Web site, by phone (410-974-5829) or mail. Maryland is the first state to accept on-line filing of extensions.
