Mt. Hebron's Stromberg to play soccer and lacrosse at Loyola

April 09, 1997|By Rick Belz | Rick Belz,SUN STAFF

Mike Stromberg of Mount Hebron has signed a letter of intent to play soccer and lacrosse for Loyola College next fall on a partial athletic scholarship.

Stromberg, a first-team All-Metro striker last fall when he scored 13 goals and had five assists, also was recruited for lacrosse by Notre Dame and Towson State.

"I signed with Loyola because it is a good school and I'm getting money, but also because it is close by and my family will be able to see me play," Stromberg said.

A three-sport athlete who also excelled in basketball, the 6-foot-2, 175-pound Stromberg is playing defense this season for Mount Hebron's lacrosse team.

He has been All-County in all three sports, and plans to major in business. He has a 3.57 GPA and a 1,100 SAT.

Five at Towson

Howard County has five players on Towson State's lacrosse team this spring. They are: John Campbell (Oakland Mills), Iggy Levelev (Oakland Mills), Dave Friedman (Hammond), Matt Treese (Atholton) and Matt Stromberg (Mount Hebron).

Treese is the backbone of Towson's midfield defense and has 11 ground balls, two goals and two assists.

Stromberg starts at longstick defender, and Campbell plays a lot DTC at that position. Levelev has scored one goal on one shot. Friedman, last season's Defensive Player of the Year, has not seen much action.

Good freshman season

Irving Conwell completed a solid freshman season for Mount St. Mary's basketball team.

Conwell started 15 times and played in 22 of the Mount's 27 games. He averaged 8.7 points, 1.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds.

He was the Mount's high scorer twice and high rebounder in five games.

The team was 14-13 overall and 10-8 in the NEC.

Baseball tryouts

The Dayton Raiders' 15-16 baseball team will hold tryouts Saturday and Sunday at Buckshot Field in Dayton at 1 p.m.

The Laurel American Legion Post 60 will hold tryouts for the 16-18 team at 1 p.m. at Oakland Mills High School the next three Sundays.
