Hits and misses

April 07, 1997|By Peter Schmuck

On the field: Cal Ripken hit his third home run of the season in the second inning, with the bases empty, off Rangers starter Roger Pavlik that kicked off another multi-hit performance for the Orioles' third baseman. Ripken went 3-for-5 and is batting .476 through the first five games of the season.

In the dugout: Manager Davey Johnson removed right-hander Mike Mussina after just four innings of work, but the early hook probably had as much to do with Mussina's performance as the elbow soreness that caused him to miss his Opening Day starting assignment. Mussina struggled to locate his fastball, giving up seven runs on eight hits. He threw 71 pitches.

In the clubhouse: Mussina said afterward that he felt good about the long-term implications of his performance, even if the immediate results were not good: "The biggest test was to get out there in a game situation. I got that done. It just didn't turn out the way I wanted."
