Howard County police charged a man and woman arrested in Columbia last week with possession of drugs and a sawed-off shotgun.

The man also was charged with assault and fleeing police when officers tried to search his car, a police report said.

Police said they approached a car in the Clary's Forest Pool parking lot at 11 p.m. Thursday after smelling marijuana coming from the vehicle.

After the driver was asked to step out of the car, he assaulted a police officer and fled on foot, according to the police report.

A woman in the car was arrested at the scene, police said.

A sawed-off shotgun was found in the car, police said.

Police said they later arrested the driver at his home.

Larry William Brown of the 12200 block of Green Meadow Drive in Columbia was charged with possession of a weapon, possession of marijuana, assault, and fleeing and eluding.

Carolyn Elizabeth Margerum of the 6400 block of Woodburn Ave. in Elkridge was charged with possession of a weapon and possession of marijuana.

Both were released from the Howard County Detention Center on Friday afternoon.
