Hits and misses

April 04, 1997|By Peter Schmuck

On the field: Cal Ripken made his first error of the year, #F allowing a bouncer by Bip Roberts to skip through his legs in the third inning. It was the first error he has made at third base since 1982. He played the position flawlessly in his six games there last year.

In the dugout: Manager Davey Johnson left fill-in starter Scott Kamieniecki in the game for the fifth inning, hoping to get him his first major-league victory since last April 24, but he couldn't hold the Orioles' slim 2-1 lead. He gave up three runs in the fifth and gave way to reliever Terry Mathews.

In the clubhouse: Johnson was asked before the game when sore-ribbed Brady Anderson will be ready to play center field. "That's up to the doctor," Johnson said. "Dr. Brady. I'm sure he'll let me know."
