MBNA steps up as baseball's card

MBNA American Bank will become the official credit card issuer of Major League Baseball, the company said yesterday.

MBNA signed Major League Baseball to an exclusive agreement that allows it to use all 30 team logos on its credit cards and in nationwide marketing campaigns.

The company will have rights to issue credit cards bearing the marks and logos for other Major League Baseball-related programs, such as the Cooperstown Collection of memorabilia, the Negro Leagues and Major League Baseball events that include the playoffs, World Series and All-Star games.

The credit card will carry no annual fee and will offer a 5.9 percent introductory rate on balance transfers and cash advances.

MBNA, based in Wilmington, Del., said this year it would open a regional headquarters in Hunt Valley and create 3,000 jobs.

MBNA's sports sector is one of its fastest-growing areas. The company has agreements in every major sport, through affiliations with the National Football League, the National Hockey League and the National Basketball Association.
