Not every entry is a 'dual qualifier'

March 27, 1997|By Tom Keyser

Many bettors won't reach for their wallets until they know which Kentucky Derby horses are "dual qualifiers."

Those are horses with a dosage index of 4.0 or below and who rank within 10 pounds of the highweight on the Experimental Free Handicap. Dosage is an aid in determining a horse's stamina based on pedigree, and the Experimental Free Handicap ranks last year's 2-year-olds based on performance.

This year's "dual qualifiers" with dosage indexes are Ordway, 1.00; Silver Charm, 1.22; Blazing Sword, 1.35; The Silver Move, 2.00; Jules, 2.08; Cash Deposit, 2.33; Gold Tribute, 2.86; Hello, 3.00; Traitor, 3.00; Boston Harbor, 3.67; Swiss Yodeler, 3.92, and Stolen Gold, 4.00.
