Construction of Food Lion is under way

March 27, 1997

Construction has started on a long-delayed Food Lion supermarket in Taneytown.

The Taneytown Food Lion, scheduled to open in October, will be a 33,000-square-foot store, the smaller of two standard supermarkets the company builds. The larger model is 45,000 square feet.

The North Carolina-based chain signed a lease for a supermarket at Baltimore Street and Chevron Drive in 1994.

Food Lion spokeswoman Tawn Nanh declined to provide details but attributed the delay in construction to "financial problems on the developer's part."

The Taneytown store will be Food Lion's second in Carroll County. The company has a supermarket in Eldersburg, one of about 20 stores in Maryland.

Food Lion, one of the nation's largest supermarket chains, reported sales of $7 billion in 1996.
