Kansas alum Smith feels Jayhawks' pain

March 23, 1997|By Ken Murray

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Dean Smith went out of his way to offer condolences for Kansas after the No. 1 Jayhawks' 85-82 upset loss to Arizona in a Southeast Regional semifinal.

"I want to interject how disappointed I am personally for the University of Kansas," said Smith, a Kansas alum. "The way this tournament has become, the regular season has become almost meaningless.

"We've created a monster with this tournament, but it's fun and we're thrilled to be here. But there is too much emphasis placed on this tournament. It's not a best-of-seven and there are days when a great team can just not play well or play great and still lose."
