DEATHS ELSEWHERE

March 23, 1997

The Rev. Wilbert Vere Awdry, 85, who delighted generations of children with his tales of "Thomas the Tank Engine," died Friday in London. The son of a train-loving clergyman, Awdry started spinning tales of railway engines for his son. He produced his first book in 1945 and his last, "Thomas' Christmas Party," in 1984.
