UM's Guzzio wins two matches, advances to NCAA quarterfinals Terp improves to 37-0

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Maryland's Jim Guzzio has advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA wrestling championships, winning two matches yesterday to improve his record to 37-0.

Guzzio (134 pounds) will face Erik Smith of Appalachian State today in the quarterfinals at Northern Iowa University. A victory would put Guzzio into the semifinals and automatically make him an All-American.

Guzzio defeated Ed Hockenberry of Bloomsburg State, 14-3, in the first round and won a 6-0 decision over Scott Marr of Minnesota in the second round.

Four other Maryland wrestlers lost in the first round yesterday: Shane Mack (142) lost to Brendan Buckley of Fresno State, 11-7; Jeff Whalen (150) was beaten by Chad Kraft of Minnesota, 12-2; Arash Alizadeh (158) was pinned by Joe Williams of Iowa in 2: 35; and David Stephens (167) lost to Scott Chapman of Stanford, 9-1.

Coppin State's Keno Brown (190) and Kenny Hunter (275) also lost in the first round.
