A collision between a tractor-trailer and a van closed part of the intersection of Route 175 and U.S. 1 for five hours early yesterday, Howard County police said.

Shortly after midnight, the driver of the tractor-trailer, John Langston Crawley Jr. of Richmond, Va., ran a red light and collided with the van, according to a police report.

One of the tractor-trailer's fuel tanks ruptured, and 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the road.

State and county officials closed the eastbound lanes of Route 175 at the intersection while the spill was cleaned up, police said.

Police said Crawley was not injured in the incident. The unidentified driver of the van received minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.

Police were investigating the accident.
