Ondaatje's 'Billy the Kid'

CLASSICAL MUSIC

March 20, 1997|By Stephen Wigler

One of the most important musical premieres taking place in Baltimore this season is a coming performance in Meyerhoff Hall by the celebrated British a cappella vocal ensemble the King's Singers, with the Baltimore Choral Arts Society, of a new work by distinguished American composer Libby Larsen.

Larsen was jointly commissioned by the King's Singers, the BCAS and the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus to write a piece based on an extended prose poem by Michael Ondaatje (the author of the Booker Award-winning novel "The English Patient") on the subject of "Billy the Kid." The concert will also include the King's Singers in a diverse program that ranges from Renaissance madrigals to British folk songs.

Tickets for the March 22 concert by the King's Singers and the Baltimore Choral Arts Society in Meyerhoff Hall at 8 p.m. range from $10 to $31. There will be a pre-concert lecture by Larsen at 7 p.m. For tickets or further information, call 410-523-7070 or 800-750-0875.
