New merry-go-round is installed at mall

After more than a month without a merry-go-round, The Mall in Columbia has installed a new carousel to replace one that was removed in January after what mall officials said were complaints of poor service.

The turquoise, lavender and gold carousel -- a replica of an antique -- was installed about 3 1/2 weeks ago, said Karen P. Johnson, spokeswoman for the mall.

Employees of Kehoe Carousel Inc. of New Jersey operate the carousel from the second-floor spot near the entrance to Sears. The admission price, $1.25, was not changed.

Customers complained that the former merry-go-round -- operated by a different New Jersey company -- was not always open on time and sometimes was left unattended, Johnson said. It stopped operating Jan. 19.

The machine, which took four days to assemble, has 20 bobbing horses and four padded benches, but does not have a spinning booth as the old one did, she said.
