Man seeks release from jail to get lawyer judge refuses

March 18, 1997

A Westminster man awaiting trial in eight cases -- six of which involve his allegedly selling cocaine to undercover officers -- asked a Circuit Court judge yesterday to release him from jail so he could hire a private attorney.

Anthony D. Oram, 34, of the first block of Liberty St. has been held without bail at the Carroll County Detention Center in Westminster since Dec. 24.

Judge Luke K. Burns refused to release Oram but reduced his bail to $50,000 on the drug charges and $5,000 on a charge of violating parole on a drug conviction.

State's Attorney Jerry F. Barnes told the judge that Oram has six pending drug cases as well as two pending trials on felony charges of assault, battery, malicious destruction of property and theft over $300.

Oram was charged with 32 counts, including nine counts of distribution of cocaine, nine counts of possession of cocaine and seven counts of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, stemming from a four-month undercover drug investigation by Westminster police that ended in January.

Oram also was charged with five counts of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, one count of solicitation to sell cocaine and one count of theft.
