ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Salisbury State's late comeback faltered in the final minute last night and Alvernia (Pa.) survived, 89-84, in the NCAA Division III men's tournament quarterfinals.

The Sea Gulls (25-6) trailed 80-62 with 3: 47 left, but pulled within 85-82 with 25 seconds remaining before Shawn Johnson missed a three-point try.

"We wanted to drive," Sea Gulls coach Ward Lambert said of the miss. "We wanted to score and then play our options. But Shawn had an open shot. Tonight was one of the nights it didn't fall for us."

Daimen Hunter led all scorers with 31 for Alvernia (26-4) and hit 11 of 11 free throws, including six in the final 1: 27.

Bill Lancaster led Salisbury State with 17 points.
