Biggest upset

Iowa State over Cincinnati: The Bearcats were chosen No. 1 in some preseason predictions, but a shaky backcourt caught up with Cincinnati, forcing a second-round exit.

Biggest blowout

North Carolina over Colorado: The Tar Heels dominated the Buffaloes in the second half, with a 38-14 run in the first 12 minutes.

Rising conference

Pacific-10: California, Arizona and UCLA reserved spots in the Sweet 16 yesterday and padded the Pac-10's record in the tournament to 7-1.

Falling conference

Big East: Villanova and Boston College were sent packing, leaving Providence the only Big East team still alive.

Calling long distance

St. Joseph's set a record for most three-pointers attempted in a tournament game with 43, breaking the record of 42 set three days earlier by Long Island against Villanova.

Tough on the little guys

Of the 21 teams from conferences that placed only one team in the tournament, three made it to the second round, and one of those, College of Charleston (Trans America), was knocked out yesterday. The two still alive are Coppin State (MEAC) and Tennessee- Chattanooga (Southern).
