March 16, 1997

Rear Adm. Raymond H. "Ben" Bass, 87, a World War II naval hero and Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast, died Monday in Glendale, Calif. He was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame last year for his record-setting rope climb at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles -- 6.7 seconds up an 8-meter rope.

He was the only submarine skipper to survive two missions into the treacherous Sea of Japan during World War II. He was awarded two Navy Crosses.
