Spring break

March 14, 1997|By Buster Olney

What the Orioles did yesterday: In a battle of Grapefruit League leaders, the Orioles lost to the Marlins, 4-1, in brutal, windy conditions. Nerio Rodriguez, victimized by several windblown hits, gave up four runs in the sixth and seventh inning to take the loss.

What they'll do today: The Orioles (10-4) take on the Braves and will pitch Rocky Coppinger, Terry Mathews and Randy Myers. Cal Ripken, Brady Anderson, B. J. Surhoff and Eric Davis, who didn't make the long trip to Viera yesterday, will be back in action today.

You know it's spring training when: Players cover themselves with sunscreen. Minor-league third baseman Scott McClain takes chances, wearing a thick layer of protection on his lips to prevent blisters.
