No. 8 Duke upends N. Carolina in ACC behind Fay, Allen, 8-7 Bucknell tops Mount

Georgetown beats Butler

John Fay scored two goals and Scott Allen added two more to lead No. 8-ranked Duke to an 8-7 victory over No. 7 North Carolina in an Atlantic Coast Conference lacrosse game yesterday.

The Blue Devils improved to 3-1 overall, and 2-0 in the ACC.

Jeremy Carey drew visiting North Carolina (2-2) within a goal with 1: 30 left in the game, but Duke held on behind 11 saves from goaltender Jor Kirmser.

Five of North Carolina's last six losses have been by one goal.

Bucknell 12, Mount St. Mary's 10: Michael Kennedy scored four times and had three assists as the Bison opened with a home win. Marl DelGrego added three goals and two assists for Bucknell.

Georgetown 10, Butler 8: Junior midfielders Greg Hubschmann and Mike Corry each scored two goals as No. 6 Georgetown edged Butler (1-2) at home to improve to 3-1. Sophomore goaltender Brian Hole stopped 15 shots for the Hoyas.

St. Mary's 15, Widener 4: Senior attackman Pete Dixon scored six goals and sophomore midfielder Jeff Jeffers added two goals and two assists as St. Mary's improved to 2-2. Widener fell to 0-2.

Essex CC 22, Catonsville CC 14: Jerry Sciavno (Calvert Hall) scored six goals as visiting Essex Community College (1-0) defeated Catonsville (0-2).

Eric Hass led Catonsville with three goals. Essex's Carey Taylorson (Dulaney) had four goals and Todd Arrup had three goals and four assists.


Western Maryland 18, Limestone 2: Freshman Meghan Bellucci registered four goals and five assists in her collegiate debut as the Green Terror opened its season with a home win.
