A 36-year-old man charged in the fatal beating of a 1-year-old boy in the child's West Baltimore home surrendered to police yesterday.

Kurt Darnell Conaway of the 4500 block of N. Rogers Ave. was charged in a warrant early yesterday with first-degree murder and assault in the death of Julius Dayquam Curry. Police said Conaway is the boyfriend of Julius' mother.

Conaway, accompanied by his attorney, surrendered about 5 p.m. at police headquarters downtown, police said. He was formally charged and was being held without bond at the Central Booking and Intake Center pending a bail-review hearing.

Police said Conaway was caring for Julius on Saturday and told investigators that he called an ambulance after finding the boy unresponsive in his girlfriend's rowhouse in the 1100 block of Harlem Ave.

The child was taken to the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12: 30 p.m. Monday. Dr. David Fowler, who performed the autopsy, ruled the death a homicide by blunt-force trauma. Police said the child had bruises on his head and a broken tooth.

Police said they talked with Conaway after the hospital report but did not seek to arrest him until after the ruling by the state medical examiner's office.
