Owings Mills' 152-pounder Steve Kessler blanked National Prep champ Billy Phillips of DeMatha, 3-0, and downed Linganore's 3A-4A state champ Ryan Green, 11-2, before a thrilled crowd and several television news cameras in last night's Senior All-Star Classic at Johns Hopkins University.

After a scoreless first period with Philips, Kessler, who earned the Outstanding Wrestler Award, followed his early escape with a swift takedown for the difference and rode out Phillips the remainder of the bout. Kessler then controlled Green with leg rides for four near-fall points, and countered him for three takedowns.

"Nothing was really working for me in the first match. I was cold, and hadn't really gotten warmed up," said Kessler, who is the state's second four-time state champ -- the first to go unbeaten at 148-0.

"The second kid [Green] really came after me," Kessler said. "I was able to work the legs and everything much better."

Green proved it, winning, 7-6, over Phillips, who signed in November with James Madison on a wrestling scholarship.

"I watched Kessler at states last weekend, and I wanted to come out and cause some flurries to neutralize his speed," said Green. "But every time I reached for his head, he was in on my legs. He's quick."

Mount St. Joseph state champ Ben Dyer, trailing, 4-2, stunned Sherwood's two-time 3A-4A state champion Graham Manley with a pin in 2: 38. Dyer had lost, 3-1, earlier to Milford Mill's two-time 1A-2A champ Greg Forbes, who lost, 6-2, to Manley.

"I hit a Peterson on him [Manley], which I do every day in the practice room, but never in a match," said Dyer, who weighs 278 to Manley's 215.

Glenelg's two-time 1A-2A champ Jeremy Lignelli (160), ranked No. 3, showed the benefits of practicing with Kessler last week. Lignelli avenged his only loss of the year, 4-3, over Curley's National Preps champ Sal Aquia, and bounced 3A-4A champ Bo Harper of Frederick, 9-3.

Sparrows' Point's two-time state champ Tommy Free (125) blanked Spalding's Jimmy Foster, 5-0, and scored six near-fall points to hammer Northern's 3A-4A runner-up Eric Miller, 12-4. Owings Mills two-time state runner-up Ari Dolid (135) edged Mount St. Joseph's MIAA champ Erik Schafer, 9-5, and beat C. Milton Wright's 3A-4A runner-up Mike Reilly, 5-1.

Mount St. Joseph Brett Gendron, who regularly goes at 112, dropped to 103 and pinned both Oxon Hill's Cesar Penaflor of the 3A-4A and North Caroline's Orlando Cano.
