Mel Farr is coming to Baltimore.

The former National Football League running back is not making a comeback with the Ravens -- he's in the final stages of buying Archway Ford, a financially struggling dealership in Northwest Baltimore. The price was not disclosed.

This is not Farr's first venture into the world of selling cars. Mel Farr Auto Group, one of the largest African-American dealerships in the country, owns a dozen new-car outlets in four states.

Archway is the company's first venture in Maryland. The day-to-day running of the dealership, which will change its name to Mel Farr Ford, will be handled by Stanley M. Goldsberry, who acquired Archway two years ago.

That doesn't mean Farr won't be seen in Baltimore.

"He a hands-on manager," Goldsberry said of Farr, who is expected to spend at least one week a month at the local dealership during a transition period.

Farr said he was "coming to the aid of a friend [Goldsberry] who was having some difficulties. With my 23 years of experience in the industry, I think we can make money there."
