Forbes' 6 goals help No. 1 Terps edge Carolina, 10-8, in opener

Sarah Forbes scored six goals and added an assist as top-ranked Maryland downed No. 12 North Carolina, 10-8, yesterday in College Park. It was the 37th straight win for the two-time defending national-champion Terps (1-0).

Forbes scored with just 24 seconds left before halftime to give Maryland a 7-4 lead. The Tar Heels (2-1) closed within two goals behind Lori Pasquantonio, who had a goal and two assists.

Goucher 17, Bridgewater 11: Kristin Carey had seven goals and two assists as host Goucher (1-0) defeated Bridgewater (0-2) despite a five-goal spurt by Renee Luers. Liz Low added three goals and two assists for the Gophers.

Salisbury State 17, Villa Julie 5: Sandy Gilbarti scored four goals to pace visiting Salisbury State (1-0) over Villa Julie (0-2).
