I'm Reading. . .

March 09, 1997

This week I am reading children's books: two for myself and one over and over to my 3-year-old son.

"The Cuckoo's Child" by Suzanne Freeman. An outstanding book for an older reader about a girl whose dream of returning to America comes true at great cost.

"The Ramsey Scallop" by Frances Temple. The story of a pilgrimage from England to Santiago, Spain, in 1300 by Elenor and her betrothed, Thomas.

"A First Look at Frogs, Toads and Salamanders" by Millicent E. Selsam and Joyce Hunt. Illustrated by Harriet Springer. An old book, but a very good introduction to natural history for children, especially with spring and tadpoles coming.

Megan Whalen Turner writes fiction for children and lives in Maryland. Her recent book "The Thief," published by Greenwillow, was a Newbery Honor Book for 1997.
