A 14th candidate for an Anne Arundel County school board seat has surfaced.

Barton B. Roper of Crofton will seek the at-large position. Sponsored by Crofton Downs Homeowners Association, he is the third person with a Crofton connection to run for the seat.

The cut-off date for applications for the five-year term was last Saturday, but the Rev. David Berg, chairman of the Anne Arundel School Board Nominating Convention, said he would accept late applications if they were postmarked March 1.

The convention recommends candidates to the governor, who makes the appointment.

Representatives of organizations in the county can register as convention delegates by mail by March 15 or at the door at any of three hearings.

The hearings will be held April 8 at Meade High School, April 17 at Annapolis Senior High School and April 23 at Chesapeake High School. Delegates will vote May 7 at Glen Burnie High School, forwarding the names of the top two vote-getters for each vacancy to the governor.

In addition, Christopher Barbour, a Meade High School junior, and Jennifer Svara, an Annapolis Senior High School junior, are running for the student seat on the board. Student government representatives will cast their ballots March 20 at Severna Park High School.
