S. Carroll's hot streak buries Kennedy Cavaliers score on 11 of 12 possessions after halftime

WHEATON -- South Carroll broke open a tight game when it scored on 11 of its first 12 possessions of the second half to get past Kennedy, 69-52, in a Class 3A West region playoff game.

After the game was tied 30-30 at the half, South Carroll (17-6) scored the first 22 points of the second half to take control.

Senior guard Shannan Henley scored 28 points and played a solid all-around game, also handling much of the ball-handling duties with senior point guard Lindsey Vosloh out of the lineup.

Vosloh, out with an illness, may be back when the Cavaliers meet Richard Montgomery tomorrow in the region semifinal.

South Carroll was nearly flawless of offense in the pivotal third quarter. Henley scored nine in the quarter with senior center Ce Wagener (14 points) adding six and senior forward Jaime Yokay hitting for five more.

"They just came out and started to play like they can," said South Carroll coach Al Skierski. "Each basket picked us up. We started making our shots and our confidence came. We saw we could play with them."

F.S. Key 54, Long Reach 49: Stephanie Stambaugh and Cindy Sheedy combined for 33 points as the Eagles (20-2) beat the host Lightning in a 1A South quarterfinal. Thandi Howell led Long Reach with 16 points. F.S. Key and Urbana meet in a region semifinal tomorrow.

Hammond 55, Surrattsville 36: Chrystal Todd scored 19 and Rene Hines added 16 as No. 12 Hammond (20-4) topped visiting Surrattsville in a 2A South quarterfinal. The Bears held a 32-14 halftime lead. Hammond will meet Glenelg or Forestville in a region semifinal tomorrow.

Meade 75, Calvert 46: Angie Creek had a game-high 20 points to lead the host and No. 14 Mustangs (22-3) in a 4A South quarterfinal game.

Boys

Thomas Johnson 77, Liberty 53: Terence Morris had 15 points as Thomas Johnson downed visiting Liberty in a 3A West quarterfinal. Frank Campanella had 16 points, including four three-pointers, and Jeff Wharton added 14 for Liberty.

Long Reach 64, F.S. Key 44: Chris Smith had 21 points and Devin Conwell added 16 points and 10 rebounds as the host Lightning (8-13) won a 1A South quarterfinal game. Long Reach will meet Victor Cullen or Boonsboro in a semifinal game today.

River Hill 59, Catoctin 48: Jay Kreider scored 21 as River Hill (5-17) beat visiting Catoctin in a 1A South quarterfinal. River Hill will meet Brunswick or Hereford in a region semifinal game today.
