In four games including the Catholic League Tournament championship win over then-No. 1 Mercy (58-48), Lipton, a sophomore guard, totaled 77 points, 23 assists, 20 rebounds and 20 steals. St. Mary's also beat Seton Keough (57-46), St. Frances (69-60) and Gwynn Lake (63-46).

Against an opponent who was bigger by 57 pounds and nine inches, Marrow (27-1, 22 pins) won the Class 3A-4A East Region heavyweight title, 9-1, over Nate Brooks from Annapolis. Marrow registered pins in the region quarterfinals and semifinals to reach the championship match.

Martin, who has ranked among the area's top three scorers all season, collected 38 points, including five three-pointers, four rebounds, five assists and five steals in a win over Smithsburg (73-63) in the first round of the Class 1A South regional tournament.

At the end of the school year each player chosen as an Athlete of the Week will be invited to a luncheon Monday, June 9, 1997 at the Towson Sheraton where one male and one female Athlete of the Year will be chosen.
