St. John Baptist Church gets ready for anniversary

Preparing to celebrate its 26th anniversary Sunday, the congregation of St. John Baptist Church is already looking to the future, its pastor says.

"We are approaching a new challenge, which is preparing ourselves for the 21st century," said the Rev. Dr. Robert A. F. Turner, who became the church's fourth pastor in 1993. "In order to be relevant, we have to concentrate on spiritual, community and economic development."

The west Columbia congregation, which worships at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, will hold an anniversary service Sunday at 11: 45 a.m., featuring Gardner C. Taylor, senior pastor emeritus of the Concord Baptist Church of Christ in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Metzler's Garden Center to add greenhouse

Metzler's Garden Center on Owen Brown Road is adding a 12,000-square-foot greenhouse, creating a quarter-acre of space under cover for annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs.

The addition, which is expected to be completed next month, will provide space for new "themed" displays, such as butterfly gardens.

A preview of the garden center's Spring Flower and Garden Showcase, to benefit Howard County General Hospital's new pediatric unit, will be held March 20.
