That's using your head

The biggest hat mistake women make is buying one and not wearing it. Designer B. Michael wants to change that pattern. "Women lose confidence when it comes to wearing a hat," says '' Michael. "In traveling to show my lines I sell a ton of hats, but I don't see many hats being worn as a matter of course. I hope hats become contagious. Women who are seen in hats build the confidence of others to get theirs out of the hat box."

Women of the Baltimore chapter of The Links, Inc. need no such confidence-building. Members of the social and service organization know how to hat with panache and have invited Michael to showcase his designs at the annual fashion show "Hats Off to Spring," which supports their scholarship fund and other civic projects. Expect hat pizazz. Michael has done looks for designers like Louis Feraud, been featured in magazines like Vogue and made hats for legends like Lena Horne. In addition to his signature couture line, Michael is design director for Aldo Hat Corporation, which makes Mr. John Classics and private lines for the nation's top retailers. He designed "Dynasty" millinery during that show's heyday.

Saks Fifth Avenue fashion director Lynn Montedonico will produce the traditional Easter Monday show March 31 at Martin's West. For ticket information call (410) 542-7162. The premiere issue of Mode magazine is on the stands. It's slick, useful, sometimes irreverent. Fashion features are right on the trends and editorial content is thoughtful. It's a magazine targeted at women who wear size 12 and up -- about half the female population of the United States. What separates Mode from its predecessors is attitude. Enough of all this whining about waif models. The editors get right to the point and show smart, large, sexy women wearing great clothes in real sizes. Designers are finally figuring it out. Mode is well on the way to burying muumuu mentality forever.

Marie Claire, a relative newcomer on the glossy fashion mag market, is breaking ground on magazine/retail merchandising tie-ins. A blue card affixed to the March cover entitles readers to a variety of discounts when used in conjunction with the coupons inside. There's a coupon for a 20 percent discount at Express that is good for a one-time purchase without limit on the number of items. Read the fine print and check it out.

Perennially funky designer Betsey Johnson, 54, who hung with Andy Warhol, married into the Velvet Underground and dressed Patti Smith on her daughter's X Generation: "They're way ahead of me. I think 20 is where 35 used to be."
