John Carmel Hall Sr., 82, worked at News American

John Carmel Hall Sr., a retired News American makeup editor, died of pneumonia Monday at Carroll County General Hospital in Westminster. He was 82 and had been a resident of Copper Ridge Nursing Home in Sykesville since 1995.

A Mass of Christian burial was offered Thursday.

The former resident of Waverly and Northwood began his newspaper career in 1932 as a copy boy and retired in 1984 as a sports makeup editor.

For many years, he was a member of St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church on Gorsuch Ave., where he was a Eucharistic minister and lector. He also worked with the needy and homeless members of the parish.

He was born in Lauraville and was a City College graduate.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Lillian Andrews; five sons, John Hall Jr. of Phoenixville, Pa., Thomas Hall of Pasadena, Francis Hall of Bel Air, James Hall of Forest Hill and Joseph Hall of Eldersburg; a daughter, Carol Ann Thornton of Manchester; a sister, Marie Wright of Baltimore; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
