Man with bike steals stereo equipment from church

February 28, 1997

A man with no bottom front teeth stole $750 worth of stereo equipment from an Annapolis church Wednesday and rode off on a bicycle. A construction worker renovating the church chased the man and retrieved the equipment, county police said.

The thief, however, is still at large.

Charles Haupt, a trustee at Weems Creek Baptist Church in the 600 block of Bestgate Road, told police the man walked into the church about 1 p.m., stuffed an equalizer and two microphones into a knapsack, ran out to an orange, Huffy bicycle and fled, police said.

Haupt called police while Ned Ormsby, the construction worker, chased the man in a car. Ormsby caught up with the man at Admiral Drive and Moreland Parkway and demanded the stereo equipment.

The man turned over the equipment and rode off on his bicycle while Ormsby returned to the church, police said.
