Spring break

February 27, 1997|By Peter Schmuck

What the Orioles did yesterday: The club played an eight-inning intrasquad game in preparation for today's exhibition opener.

What the Orioles will do today: The Orioles open the Grapefruit League exhibition season with a home game against the Minnesota Twins. Left-hander Jimmy Key will make his competitive debut in an Orioles uniform. He's scheduled to pitch two innings and be followed by Rule 5 draft choice Mike Johnson, Archie Corbin, Esteban Yan, Terry Mathews and Matt Snyder. Brad Radke will start for the Twins, followed by Scott Aldred, Dan Serafini, Mike Trombley and Eddie Guardado.

You know it's spring training when: Closer Randy Myers shows up 12 days after the other pitchers and proclaims that he's a day early. Technically, he was. No one is required to report until today.
