Man awaits extradition in '95 assault

A former Westminster man accused of beating a woman on West Main Street in 1995 has been arrested in Orlando, Fla., and is awaiting extradition to Maryland, police said.

An arrest warrant charges Jerry W. Clegg, 41, with attempted maiming, assault and battery, police said. Details of Clegg's arrest in Florida were unavailable.

According to police, Tammy Stewart, a former girlfriend from Culpeper, Va., was visiting at the time of the Aug. 17, 1995, incident.

Witnesses said a man pulled the woman's hair, punched her in the face until she fell, and kicked her in the head, damaging her jaw and teeth.

Officers found her on the street, suffering from severe head and ear injuries.

Fire

Reese: Firefighters responded at 7: 23 a.m. Monday to an auto fire on Route 140 at Route 91. Units were out one hour.

Pleasant Valley: Firefighters responded at 10: 10 a.m. Monday to a fire alarm in the 600 block of Humbert Schoolhouse Road. Units were out 41 minutes.

Reese: Firefighters responded at 10: 21 a.m. Monday to a child locked in a car in the 2100 block of Misty Meadow Road. Units were out 43 minutes.

Westminster: Firefighters responded at 1: 27 p.m. Monday to an auto fire on Distillery Drive at Railroad Avenue. Units were out four minutes.

Police

Westminster: A resident of East Main Street told police Monday that a stereo was stolen from his vehicle while it was parked on West Main Street. The loss was estimated at $450.
