Woman admits to stealing from 78-year-old neighbor

February 25, 1997

A Sykesville woman pleaded guilty yesterday to stealing more than $300 from an elderly neighbor whom she had befriended and run errands for between December 1994 and December 1995.

Gloria A. Jasper, 46, will be sentenced April 30, the same day a restitution hearing is scheduled to determine the amount stolen from Sarah C. Bender, 78, of the 4700 block of Old Washington Road.

When first approached by state police, Jasper confessed to stealing $3,000, charging documents show.

"We believe the amount of restitution much closer to $17,855," prosecutor Jerry Joyce said.

In a statement of facts, Joyce said Jasper's friendship with Bender led to her being trusted by the victim to make bank transactions. Jasper would fill out bank withdrawal slips for a greater amount than the victim requested and keep the difference.

Bender's daughter became suspicious and contacted police in December 1995, court records show. An investigation led to Jasper's being charged with a continuing scheme to commit felony theft.
