Whipple, No. 4 Maryland open with win over Villanova, 13-4

Andrew Whipple scored four goals and added an assist as No. 4 Maryland defeated host Villanova, 13-4, yesterday in the men's lacrosse opener for both schools.

It's the seventh time that Whipple has totaled three or more goals in a game.

The Terps have beaten the Wildcats in four straight season openers. The Wildcats were outshot 42-24.

Maryland broke it open in the second quarter, scoring five of the six goals in that period for a 6-2 halftime lead. Terps junior attackman Matt Hahn stretched his point-scoring streak to 30 games with two goals and one assist.

North Carolina 11, Butler 5: Chase Martin and Billy Walsh each had three goals and one assist as No. 7 North Carolina (1-0) turned back visiting Butler (0-1).

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead five minutes into the game, but the Tar Heels tied it on goals by Martin and Merrill Turnbull just 1: 28 apart.

Butler and North Carolina traded goals, but the Bulldogs never trailed in the first half.

After Alex McBean put Butler ahead for the last time just 38 seconds into the second half, the Tar Heels scored six unanswered goals to pull away.
