Walters seeks help during China exhibit

In Sunday's Arts section, an incorrect day was given for auditions for the Young Victorian Theatre Company's July production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance." The auditions will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bryn Mawr School, 109 W. Melrose Ave. Call (410) 659-1308.

The Walters Art Gallery is looking for volunteers interested in helping with the day-to-day operations of the exhibition "The First Emperor: Treasures from Ancient China." The show of 80 works of art from the Qin Dynasty (221-206 B.C.) -- rarely seen outside China -- opens March 2 and runs through May 18.

Volunteers are needed to greet visitors, work at information booths, collect tickets, monitor ticket times and provide direction for the anticipated 150,000 visitors from throughout the region.

FOR THE RECORD - CORRECTION

Volunteers must attend a two-hour training session and are requested to work one shift per week for a total of four shifts throughout the exhibition. Call (410) 547-9000 for more information.

Auditions

Auditions for the Young Victorian Theatre Company's July production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance" take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Bryn Mawr School, 109 W. Melrose Ave. All principal roles are open and are paid. Singers should prepare one song or aria in English, preferably from a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. An accompanist will be provided. Auditions for the Spotlight-er's April-May production, "Complete Works of Wllm Shksp," by the Reduced Shakespeare Company, will be held at noon Saturday at the theater, 817 St. Paul St. Needed are three males, various ages. Call (410) 366-0396.

BSO to play Carnegie Hall

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performs at Carnegie Hall Saturday, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the BSO's first appearance at the New York concert hall.

The performance is the first stop on a two-week East Coast tour that will take the orchestra to New York, New Jersey and Florida. Led by music director David Zinman, the orchestra will be joined by violinist Pamela Frank.

The orchestra will also perform in Montclair, N.J., March 2; Sarasota, Fla., March 6; Fort Lauderdale, Fla., March 7; and Orlando, Fla., March 9.

School 33 exhibition

Applications from visual artists will be accepted until 4 p.m. March 8 for participation in an exhibition during School 33's 1997-1998 gallery season at Galleries I and II and the Installation Space.

Slides of recent work will be reviewed by an independent gallery exhibition panel.

Artists interested in participating must live within a 75-mile radius of Baltimore City, and only one application per artist will be considered.
