Joseph A. Fick, 79, founded roofing firm

Joseph A. Fick, retired founder of Fick Brothers Roofing Co., died Sunday at St. Joseph Medical Center from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He was 79 and a Towson resident.

His wife of 50 years, the former Bernadene Feldmann, died in the Oct. 18 accident near Jupiter, Fla.

Mr. Fick retired in 1980 from the commercial and residential roofing company he founded in 1949 with a brother. At his death, he was chairman of the board of the East 25th Street company now operated by his sons.

He was a board member for many years of Associated Roofing Contractors of Maryland and the National Roofing Contractors Association.

The son of a roofer, Mr. Fick was born and raised in Hamilton. He was a 1937 graduate of Mount St. Joseph High School and studied at Maryland Institute, College of Art.

During World War II, he served with the Army Medical Corps in Australia and New Guinea.

He was a member of the Baltimore Yacht Club, and until he sold his yacht, the Jo-Deen, several years ago, sailed the vessel each winter to Florida, where he maintained a home in Hillsboro Beach.

Mr. Fick was a former trustee of Calvert Hall College and sponsored scholarships at Loyola College and LaSalle University Philadelphia.

He was a communicant for 40 years of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Baltimore and Ware avenues, where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today.

He is survived by four sons, Joseph A. Fick Jr. of Woodbrook, Jeffrey P. Fick of Phoenix, Jay V. Fick of Towson and Jerry E. Fick of Naples, Fla.; four brothers, Brother Edward J. Fick, a member of the Society of Mary, and Francis Fick, both of Baltimore, Charles Fick of Towson and Robert Fick of Boca Raton, Fla.; a, sister, Dorothy Knauss of Newark, Del.; and nine grandchildren.
