The Greater Odenton Improvement Association will hold its general membership meeting at 7: 30 p.m. tomorrow at the Odenton Volunteer Fire Hall on Route 175. A speaker from the state Office of Planning will talk about Gov. Parris N. Glendening's "Smart Growth" initiative, a series of bills aimed at discouraging suburban sprawl. No state money will go to county projects outside planned growth areas. That idea squares with the county's new General Development Plan.

Retired Officers' Wives

The Retired Officers' Wives will be host of a luncheon at 11 a.m. March 4 at the Fort Meade Officers Club. Gregory A. Stiverson will present a program on "Maryland Women I'd Like to Have Met." Reservations: Helen Smith, 465-5474, or Lucille Simms, (301) 776-4048. You do not have to be a Retired Officers' Wives Club member to go on the tours and day trips. Margaret Nitkoski, at 987-3169, can tell you about trips to the Blue Danube. That trip's deadline is Thursday. Other trips planned are to the Canadian Rockies and to Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks.

The Christian German American Women's Group will meet at noon Monday in the Blue Room of the Chapel Center on Rockenbach Ave. at Fort Meade. Women older than 18 are welcome to join and enjoy Christian and Heimat music. German foods will be served. For more information, call Irene Kucholick at (301) 621-7862 or Lisa Beilke at (301) 604-5880.

Giant receipts

Only a couple of weeks remain in Arundel Middle School's Giant receipt program. Receipts may be sent in with children or taken directly to the office through March 1. Last year the program helped the school obtain an Apple Color Style Writer ink jet printer, an HP color ink jet printer, a Magnavox 27-inch color television, three volleyballs and two soccer balls.
