Essex resident charged with assaulting officer

Baltimore County police charged a 24-year-old Essex man with assault yesterday in an alleged hit-and-run incident last month involving a police officer.

Officer Ray Boccelli was investigating an assault Jan. 25 at Rascals, a lounge in the 1600 block of E. Joppa Road, when he saw a car strike another vehicle, police said. When Boccelli saw that the car was about to leave, he tried to stop it, and it struck him, police said. The vehicle left.

Boccelli was treated for minor injuries.

Officers and detectives returned to the nightclub the next night and placed fliers on car windshields urging people to call police with information about the incident. Police received several leads that led to the arrest, police said.

Police charged Charles Joseph Heinz III of the 800 block of Briar Hill Place with first-degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to obey the order of a police officer.

Heinz was being held last night at the Baltimore County Detention Center in lieu of $35,000 bail.
