Broadneck, Southern and South River never threatened the team titles at yesterday's Class 2A-3A East Regional Championships but they did manage to leave the 5th Regiment Armory with a fair share of the individual medals.

Ashley Wermine of South River was one of four county athletes who won gold medals in the individual events, taking first in the girls 500-meter dash (1 minute, 22.7 seconds) and qualifying for states in the 300 with a fourth-place finish.

Sophomore Mike Rolland led Broadneck to a fourth-place finish in the boys team competition by claiming first in the 800 run in 2: 03.2. West Lake took home the team prize in the boys competition with 63 points, while the Bruins shared fourth-place with LaPlata with 37 points each.

DuVal's girls took home the other region team title with 62 points, while Broadneck and Southern shared seventh.

South River pole vaulters John Higdon and Angela Groves both emerged as region champs. Higdon, who finished second in the county meet, won the boys event by matching a personal best 11-feet and Groves won the girls title after clearing 8 feet, 3 inches.

"I tried using a new pole today because I knew it was going to be tough getting 11-6," said Higdon. "I didn't have much luck with that [11-6] but I did went high enough to win."

Jeremy Schropp of South River appeared to be on his way to a region championship in the 1,600 when he was bumped from behind by eventual champ Scott Swenson of West Lake and fell across the finish line in second place. Schropp later placed third in the 3,200 run.

"I was ranked eight in the 1,600 so I decided to stay back around fourth or fifth and I just busted it out the last couple of laps," said Schropp. "It would have been nice to have won it, but at least I know I ran a good race and was in position to win."

Robert Evans of Northeast showed his versatility by placing third in the shot put, fourth in the 300 dash and fifth in the 55 dash.

Amanda Schmidt picked up 13 points for the Bruins after finishing second in the 1,600, fourth in the 3,200 and sixth in the 800.

Broadneck's Hans Gilliam took fourth in both the high jump (5-6) and the 500 dash, and Zandi Marinzel and Carolyn Colacicco finished 2-3 for the Seahawks in the girls 3,200 run.
