Westminster mayor's choices for 2 board members endorsed

The Westminster City Council voted Monday night to endorse the mayor's replacements for two board members who are moving outside the city limits.

J. Stewart Zendgraft, now an alternate on the city's Board of Zoning Appeals, will become a member of the board effective March 1 to replace Philip B. Schaeffer, whose term expires in May 1998.

The second recommendation by Mayor Kenneth A. Yowan was to name Peter E. Loats to the parks board to replace Misti L. Cole, whose term expires in February 1998.

Loats, a senior engineer for RWD Technologies Inc., has coached youth lacrosse, taught aerobics and coordinated youth basketball for the YMCA, which he also served as an adviser for its Youth and Government Program.

Westminster High plans three parent nights

Westminster High School will hold three parent nights to discuss student scheduling for next year. General meetings will be followed by small group discussions.

Each program begins at 7 p.m. The schedule is:

Thursday: for parents of current eighth-grade students who will attend WHS next year. Departments will offer displays, and staff members will be present to talk to parents.

Feb. 19: for parents of current ninth- and 10th-grade students. Coach Frank Mantinaos will give information on NCAA guidelines.

Feb. 25: for parents of current 11th-grade students. ROTC members will speak. Mantinaos will speak about the NCAA.

Fire

Westminster: Firefighters responded at 7: 14 p.m. Monday to a truck fire on Route 140 at Englar Road. Units were out 22 minutes.

Westminster: Firefighters responded at 11: 19 a.m. Monday to a carbon monoxide alarm in the first block of Union St. Units were out 25 minutes.

Westminster: Firefighters from Reese, Manchester, Pleasant Valley and Glyndon and Owings Mills in Baltimore County assisted Westminster at 1: 09 p.m. Monday, responding to a microwave fire at Western Maryland College on West Main Street. Units were out 51 minutes.
