The Harford County Sheriff's Office is appealing to the mother of a newborn abandoned in a van Monday night to contact officials.

A couple found the 9-pound, 21-inch baby boy wrapped in a bedsheet on the front seat of their Ford van shortly after 9 p.m. Monday. Police said the van, parked in the 1800 block of Belair Road, had been there about an hour.

"The baby was doing pretty good, although his temperature was slightly lower than it should have been," said Sgt. Edward Hopkins, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office. "The baby was cleaned up, and the umbilical cord had been cut."

The newborn -- believed to have been about 12 to 15 hours old when he was found -- was taken to Fallston General Hospital where he was in good condition. He was transferred to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Officials are imploring the mother to come forward so she can be medically evaluated.

Anyone with information about the baby or his mother should contact the Sheriff's Office at 836-5442.
